Bereavement Counselling

After a significant loss, it is normal and natural to grieve.

The process of grief can take a short amount of time, or years depending very much on the individual and the specific circumstances.

According to the writings of Elizabeth Kubler Ross, the grieving process can be split into six different stages. They are:

  • Shock

  • Denial

  • Anger

  • Bargaining

  • Depression

  • Acceptance

This is not necessarily a linear process and every individual experiences this
process in their own personal way.

My goal in bereavement counselling is to steer the bereaved through the stages of grief and help them in their journey to acceptance. The road of grief can be filled with many obstacles, either intense feelings of guilt or unfinished business with the deceased. Counselling assists in processing these feelings and encouraging coping skills to deal with the sometimes suffocating emotions.

I have been a volunteer counsellor for the Nechama bereavement counselling organisation since 2012. My work there has given me invaluable experience and education in working with bereavement.

Bereavement counselling encompasses many types of losses, such as:

  • Death of a parent

  • Death or illness of a child

  • Suicide

  • Miscarriage and stillborn

  • Sudden death of close friend or relative

  • Death after a prolonged illness

I also have experience in counselling children who have suffered a significant loss.
